The Swan Chair: A Masterpiece of Organic Design

The Fritz Hansen Swan Chair, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, is an iconic example of modernist furniture design. Jacobsen created the chair specifically for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where he was responsible not only for the architecture of the building but also for the entire interior design, including the furniture, lighting, and even the cutlery.

The Swan Chair was designed alongside the famous Fritz Hansen Egg Chair to create a sense of luxury and comfort in the hotel’s lobby and lounge areas.

Innovative Production Method

What makes the Swan Chair special is the production method developed by Fritz Hansen in the 1950s. Thanks to a new technique, the shell of the chair could be molded with a hard foam core, freeing Jacobsen for the first time from the limitations of traditional materials such as wood. This allowed him to create organic, flowing shapes that were previously difficult to achieve. The Swan Chair has no straight lines, making it appear soft and inviting, despite its sleek, minimalist design.

Design and Materials

The chair consists of a shell of fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane foam, with an aluminum base and upholstered covering in fabric or leather. Each Swan Chair is still largely upholstered by hand, which requires a great deal of time and craftsmanship. This allows the chair to maintain its luxurious appearance and high-quality finish.
