PK 22 lounge chair
1956, Poul Kjaerholm
Particularities
- Poul Kjaerholm (Denmark), born in 1929, started teaching design and furniture making himself after studying design and furniture making until he became director of “Kongelige Dansk Kunstakademi” in Copenhagen in 1976. Throughout his career, Poul designs furniture in a very recognizable style, using steel and leather, intended for mass production. From 1955 he worked with furniture manufacturer E. Kold Christensen, in 1970 his designs were purchased by Fritz Hansen. Poul Kjaerholm died in 1980 in Hillerod, Denmark.
- The PK22 is constructed from 1 steel frame and 2 covers. The inner cover is made of a self-supporting material for the constructive value so that the chair can be sat on and the outer cover is made of a covering material. If it were up to Poul Kjearholm, this cover would be made of a beautiful aniline leather.
- How can I tell if I have a PK22 from Kold Christensen or Fritz Hansen? Both manufacturers mill their logo into the steel frame, making it easy to determine which version it is.
- Are there any other details that make a difference? Yes, certainly, in the finish of the front of the seat / top of the backrest. Here the cover has been folded inwards and topstitched once or the leather with all layers has been 'cold cut', exposing the cut edge of the material. In this case, 2 decorative seams are added very close to each other.
