637 Utrecht

The Utrecht armchair was designed in 1935 by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld for the Amsterdam department store Metz & Co. Named after his hometown, the chair is a powerful example of Rietveld’s pursuit of simplicity, comfort, and architectural clarity.

The geometric shapes, where armrest and leg merge seamlessly, make the Utrecht a visual statement — sleek, graphic, and inviting. The visible blanket stitch emphasizes the lines of the design and highlights its artisanal character.

In 1988, exactly one hundred years after Rietveld’s birth, Cassina took over production. Since then, the Utrecht has grown into an international icon, loved for its distinctive form language and surprising comfort. Today, the armchair is still handcrafted in Italy, available in a wide variety of colors, fabrics, and finishes.
