Osvaldo Borsani's Divano 70

Stofferen van Osvaldo Borsani’s Divano 70 (D70)

The golden compass

From August 28 to November 22 The 10th Triennial was held in Milan, Italy in 1954. The theme of that year was 'Prefabrication – Industrial Design'. Here Osvaldo Borsani presented his patented sitting/sleeping sofa D70 or 'Divano 70'. An iconic piece of furniture in which the elegance of its design language and industrial technology come together. His presentation therefore fell completely within the theme of the triennial and this did not go unnoticed by the organization. For the first time that year, a prize was awarded for the best industrial design, based on an idea by Gio Ponti. Gio Pontie was one of the jury members that year and Osvaldo Borsani, with his D70, had the honor of being one of the first recipients of the Compasso d'Oro or 'the Golden Passer'.

Our partnership with Tecno Spa

Tecno was the first manufacturer that Meubelstoffeerderij.nl was allowed to work for. Given this long relationship, we have covered many D70s in at least as many different fabrics over the past 25 years. Of course in Tecno's own Lana Diagonale, which is unfortunately no longer available from the factory, but of which we still have some small units available. In addition, the D70 is covered at least as often in Hallingdal 65 from Kvadrat, as Tecno has also used Hallingdal as one of the permanent covering fabrics for the D70 since the launch of the D70 in 1954.

Brilliant simplicity

The D70 has a completely metal frame and the seat and backrest are identical. Due to the characteristic 'joint' in the base of
The frame allows the user to place each part separately in 9 different 'corners'. This makes it possible for the seats and backrest to take over each other's functions. If the parts are placed in the last position, a double bed is created, brilliant! Adjusting the sofa is effortless using the beautiful round dial at the back of the backrest or underside of the seat.

A shared love

If you own this classic, you undoubtedly share our admiration for this classic. Not only because of the beauty and ingenuity of the design, but also because the D70 was ultimately the starting point for Osvaldo Borsani's next work, his most famous design the P40 or 'Poltrona 40'. For me personally and for our studio, this is also a very important design, as you can read here .
