Marilyn Monroe versus Mea West - Bocca sofa

Marilyn Monroe versus Mea West - Bocca sofa
The Bocca Sofa, produced by Edra was designed by Studio 65 as a tribute to surrealist painter Salvador Dali. In 1970, Studio 65 created a modern version of Dali's original 1938 design. They named this voluptuous classic the ‘Marilyn Bocca Sofa’ in honour of Marilyn Monroe.' ‘Bocca’ is Italian for ‘mouth’.

From Salvador Dali to Studio 65

Salvador Dali painted his famous painting 'The face off Mea West, seen as an apartment' in 1934. In this painting, Mea West's face is composed of various objects detached in a flat with e.g.

paintings as her eyes, steps as her jawline and a sofa as her mouth. This painting inspired him to actually implement the design as an art installation in 1938, thus the 'Mea West Lips Sofa' came into being.

Three were made at the time, one of which is part of the surrealism collection of Museum van Boijmans van Beuningen.
