Stofferen van de Tecno P40 - Osvaldo Borsani

Sequel to the D70

Following the success of the D70 sofa (1954), Osvaldo Borsani began working on a mechanical joint that would give an armchair the freedom of movement needed to assume many different positions. The result was the P40, the icon that Osvaldo Borsani created in 1955 for Tecno, the company he had co-founded with his twin brother two years earlier in 1953. This designclassic has a small target group, but one that is characterised by great enthusiasm for this special design and we understand why.

Construction

All structural parts of the P40 are metal, the arms are made of steel and rubber allowing them to adapt perfectly to different positions from active sitting to fully reclined. Inside the frame are Pirelli webbing straps that, together with shape-cut cold foam, ultimately define the look and comfort of the P40.

Variants

Three versions of the P40 were released. The first two versions (a & b) had a round tubular frame and the backrest was not yet divisible. As was customary at the time, there was a men's (high back) and a women's version (low back). The third version (c) had a square tubular frame and a divisible backrest. Osvaldo Borsani's sitting machine had thus evolved.

See the three variants below.
